11th La Biennale Di Venezia ‧ Dark Affair

The objective of our exhibition is two folds: one, it attempts to disclose the undercurrent energy and the hidden affairs of the city at night; and two, it challenges the legitimacy of the conventional practice to design for the daytime. A commonality among the modern Asian cities is its fast pace in the day. It is not until night time that people can finally let down of their guards, and begin to connect with the city. Hence, for most of the people, they are citizens of Dark City. On the surface, the Dark City is more akin to a fanfare of light and noise. Yet, under the sea of artificial environment and fervent atmosphere are forgotten corners for intimacy. In the darkness, the structure of the city begins to fracture, the spatial layers begin to blur, and the hidden desires, tensions begin to emerge through the new impression of the city. The Dark City is the juxtaposition of these two seeming opposing faces.
