The Fubon Life Insurance Co. Headquarters is built on a corner lot, adjacent to an elevated highway, and fronted by a major boulevard. The building is also restricted by an airport 60-meter height limit. The massing of the building is rectilinear. The building is set back on the southern edge of the site to form a public plaza, which serves as a buffer to protect the office space from the highway. As for the spatial organization, an entrance hall and a commercial bank are arranged to occupy the first and second floors of the building. The entrance hall, adjacent to the plaza, is designed to form a spatial extension from the exterior into the interior. A 6-meter-high glass volume, framed in metal cornice, is recessed at the top floor to accommodate the executive office.
In order to address the client’s wish for a solid and massive building to reflect its corporate image, stone is used extensively in this project. Deeply recessed, stone-clad units are employed on the exterior walls to create a timeless quality. On the other hand, thin metal grids bisect the stone façade in a crisscross manner, producing a contrast between light and heavy, modern and tradition.
