Tong Hsing Electronics decided to build its new factory and corporate headquarters in the Bade District of Taoyuan City, due to its proximity to the existing Yingge plant, thereby increasing flexibility in terms of production capacity, technology, and workforce. The new site covers 16,700 square meters, with a total floor area of 89,000 square meters, which encompasses the headquarters building and the fabrication plant, as well as staff accommodation.
The headquarters building is an almost entirely red square box, 50 meters tall, and punctured by irregularly placed square openings of varying sizes, giving the building a modest degree of playfulness. Extending out at a right angle to the rear of this is the fabrication plant. This is a gray rectangular block, its single-color facade similarly broken up by an arrangement of vertical louvers and square terracotta tiles. To achieve a more sustainable solution, while also minimizing construction time and costs, the plant was clad in precast modular concrete panels.
The highlight of the site is the 10-story atrium at the heart of the headquarters building, which provides a pleasant internal courtyard where employees can relax, socialize, or attend corporate events. Natural light filters through the waffle slab above, bathing the space and its occupants in sunlight, while foliage hanging from wire mesh boxes, together with rows of trees at the lower level, adds softening greenery.
Numerous solid boxes with large openings protrude out into the courtyard, creating informal meeting spaces, while in the interior, the main circulation and meeting spaces are configured around the atrium, left visible behind glass walls. Horizontal timber bands then run around the perimeter at each level. The generous use of transparent partitions allows visual connections between occupants on different floors, and encourages an open and lively work environment.
