The Moon Lake area is one of the most significant historical and cultural districts in Ningbo, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and numerous historical relics. The existing Tianyige Museum, situated within the Moon Lake Historical and Cultural District, serves as one of the key features representing Ningbo’s long-standing history and culture. However, the original museum facility is limited in scale, and lacks sufficient space for further upgrades or renovations; therefore, the expansion project was introduced
The Tianyige South Hall and Surrounding Facilities Project (Plot 09, Moon Lake Historical and Cultural District, Haishu District) is an expansion project of the Tianyige Museum. As Tianyige is the oldest existing library in Asia, this project takes its precious cultural significance as the core and aims to create a distinctive museum that integrates the historical meaning and cultural arts. The project will serve multiple functions, including artifact collection, preservation and research, exhibition displays, public education, and tourism and leisure, establishing itself as a cultural showcase and space for the city’s future.
The design of the Tianyige South Hall and its surrounding facilities follows the comb-like structure of the Moon Lake’s west bank, with Yanyue Street serving as the longitudinal axis and Mayan Street and Dashuyuan Lane forming the transverse axis. This layout extends the area’s historical context and reorganizes the traditional alley patterns, including Houying Lane, Sansheng Lane, and Taiyang Lane. Additionally, it restores Xiaoshuyuan Lane to establish connection between the South Hall and various dispersed spaces and architectural elements, such as lecture halls, academies, study halls, high walls, open courtyards, dark-tiled roofs, and lattice windows. These features intertwine with the transverse, longitudinal, and branch alleys, revitalizing the alleyway spaces through creative cultural activities, thereby bringing new vibrancy to the area.
The new museum building is located on the east side of the site, while the central archive is situated on the west side, with the Lecture Hall serving as the spiritual cornerstone of the expansion project. Together with the original Tianyige Museum to the north, these structures create a dialogue centered around the theme: "By treasuring books through the ages, the pavilion is now open to the public and known to the world". Both functional areas are arranged symmetrically, converging inward. The architectural data-style reinterprets elements of Jiangnan gardens and Ningbo residential architecture into a modern architectural language, blending harmoniously with the surrounding historical structures. This approach provides a contemporary reinterpretation of the essence and spirit of traditional Ningbo architecture.
The design, which integrates architecture, interiors, and landscaping, adopts the concept of "a pavilion with scrolls, a garden with elegance." It employs modern techniques to express Tianyige’s book-collecting culture and garden philosophy across multiple dimensions. It highlights and preserves the historical journey of Tianyige’s transformation from a private collection to a public treasure, showcasing its cultural legacy and promoting its enduring influence.
