The College of Design building is located at the south entrance of the Shih Chien University campus. Aiming to break away from conventional enclosed campuses and to connect the neighboring community with an open campus, this new College of Design forms itself with two triangular volumes that create a 45-degree diagonal walkway, extending an inviting entrance for the public.
Primarily constructed with architectural concrete, aluminum panels, steel, and glass, the building maintains the neutral gray hues and exudes simplistic elegance. Aluminum sun shading louvers, a key element of the design, are placed horizontally or vertically on the east and south elevations. The geometric repetition of these louvers creates a tectonic rhythm to the building. In the evenings, light streams through the louvers, resulting in an ambience different from the daytime.
For interior planning, emphasis is placed on spatial fluidity and openness designed to encourage social interaction. Classrooms are located around the public areas on the lower levels. Design studios and professors’ offices are placed between the 5th and 7th floors. An internal atrium spanning the three floors connects three different departments. The presentation rooms and library are housed in double-height spaces on the top of the building.
