With nearly 3000 students in an approx. 10,000-square-meter site, the Fuhsing School is densely packed to accommodate K-12 programs. It is located in an upscale central urban area, with a beautiful tree-lined boulevard to its east and residential areas surrounding its other sides. Instead of a conventional front schoolyard building that differentiates the inside from the outside, ARTECH’s plan turns the brick-veneered buildings 90-degrees so that the courtyards are connected to the main boulevard in a continuous flow. As a result, the campus is less congested, creating a sense of openness for the students as well as the community.
To accommodate all the program requirements, the basements are extensively utilized to house the auditorium/gym, swimming pool with a health center, student center with a dining hall, and drop-off and parking spaces. Upper level classrooms, the library, and the administrative offices are arranged around a series of three courtyards, with the taller buildings placed on the north side to allow more sunlight for the activity fields.
The classrooms are distributed with respect to its age groups: Kindergarten to second grades are located on the lower two levels for easy access to the playing fields, while the high school classrooms are located on the top level with outdoor terraces for their activities. A layer of shared laboratories and common facilities is sandwiched between the high school and the middle school levels, and is structurally designed as a Vierendeel truss to allow large openings below for the grand open stairways.
