為了紓緩車站人潮與行車動線的壅塞與滯礙,並配合市區腹地發展規劃,將人潮導引至後站,新竹市決定將客運轉運站移至新竹車站正後方的此一基地。因此,這座小小的轉運站負擔了兩個任務:其一,是在地面層建立一座安全有效的客運車站;其二,是創造一座“招牌”式的建築,讓市民可以對此區重新定位。
以清水混凝土建造的轉運站主體相當直接明瞭。客運車在外圍遶行,旅客自站體中央進出,有效地避免了兩者可能產生的衝突。上方“招牌”造型則是以空體鋼構構成,其外覆沖孔鋁板。在白天,此巨型招牌主要顯示出金屬質感的銀灰色,而在夜間,沖孔鋁板內部的鮮紅色藉由燈光露出,形成都市中新穎活潑力的辨識性。
